RESEARCH FELLOWSHIPS
SUMMER 2009 RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES
This summer 2009, departmental support for student research will be available from the following sources - Keck funds, Eaton funds, Seaver Institute funds, Rose Hills Foundation funds, Norris Foundation funds, NSF STEP funds and Bull Foundation funds. Funding is also possible for specific types of projects from programs directed by some of our faculty members.
W.M. Keck Fund
This fund is available to students from all three colleges (CMC, Pitzer, and Scripps). Research must be done with a Joint Science faculty member.
Stipends are available at $4,000 each. Supplies, minor equipment, etc. may be applied for up to a total of $300. There are approximately 10-12 positions available for this fund.
Eaton Ecological Research Award
In memory of Bill Eaton, a CMC ecology student, the Eaton family established a fund to support research by Joint Science students in ecologically related areas. Although terms of the fund stipulate that awards are to be given to CMC students, the family has graciously allowed funds to be awarded to deserving projects by Pitzer and Scripps students. Stipends are available at $4,000 each. Supplies, minor equipment, etc. may be applied for up to a total of $300. There are 2 positions available for this fund.
Seaver Institute Research Funding
The Seaver Institute supports projects on a variety of topics including the arts, private education, youth, health concerns, public affairs, the disabled, literacy, and science. Funded projects should incorporate state-of-the-art scientific research, exceptional educational development, unique approaches to the creative arts, and the ramifications of shifting societal realities. Stipends are available at $4,000 each. Supplies, minor equipment, etc. may be applied for up to a total of $300. There are 2 positions available for this fund. Only Scripps students are eligible to apply for Seaver funding.
Rose Hills Foundation Funding
The Rose Hills Foundation Summer Science and Engineering Research Fellowships will be awarded to meritorious undergraduates who meet the following criteria: a) are majoring in the life or natural sciences (Psychology and Earth Sciences are excluded), or engineering; b) are U.S.
citizens; c) cumulative grade point average of 3.5 (although there is some flexibility on this); d) must be an upcoming junior or senior; e) whose permanent address is Southern California and resides South of the Tehachapi Mountains. Stipends are available at $5,000 each. Supplies, minor equipment, etc. may be applied for up to a total of $300. There are 8 positions available for this fund. Only CMC students are eligible to apply for Rose Hills funding.
Norris Foundation Funding
The Norris Summer Research Fellowships will give students the opportunity to gain hands-on research experience either in the campus lab working with a Joint Science faculty member, or in an off-campus research setting, including the Firestone Center for Restoration Ecology in Costa Rica or other locations abroad. Stipends are available at $4,000 each. The Foundation also allots $1,250 in lab supplies. There are 4 positions available for this fund. Only Scripps students are eligible to apply for Norris funding.
NSF STEP Funding
In keeping with the terms of the grant, the NSF STEP projects must be interdisciplinary. Students who complete both semesters of the Accelerated Integrated Science Sequence (AISS) course, have first priority for these awards. Stipends are available at $4,000 each. Supplies, minor equipment, etc. may be applied for up to a total of $300. There are 8 positions available for this fund.
Bull Foundation Funding
The Henry W. Bull Foundation has created this award for student-faculty internships for 1st and 2nd year students in science. Students will formulate a research project and link up with a faculty member interested in cooperating with the student in the proposed research. Stipends are available at $5,000 each. Supplies, minor equipment, etc. may be applied for up to a total of $300. There is 1 position available for this fund.
Only Scripps students are eligible to apply for Bull funding.
If you are interested in doing summer research, please start talking to Joint Science faculty now. Once a faculty member has agreed to serve as your project mentor, you must submit a completed proposal/application form.
Please use the attached application form when applying for any of the above awards. You should also ask your potential supervisor to submit a statement/recommendation on your behalf, to be included with your application.
Please submit your application and recommendation form to Velda Ross in the Joint Science office, room 110, by Monday, February 9, 2009. The Joint Science Budget Committee will evaluate these applications and notify all applicants of their decision by early March. |
