When the jar is accelerated, the cork is in an accelerated reference frame and in this frame experiences an inertial force. For a hanging pendulum, which hangs because of gravity, the inertial force is in the opposite direction as the acceleration. However, the cork is subject to a buoyant force in the opposite direction as gravity, and so it is unsurprising that the cork tilts forward as the jar is accelerated.
Anyone who has driven with helium balloons in a car has experienced this phenomenon. |
