transpBall and Ring Set

transpball and ring set

The ball and ring apparatus is used to demonstrate the thermal expansion of metals. The diameter of the ball is slightly smaller than the inside diameter of the ring. When both the ring and the ball are at room temperature, the ball passes easily through the ring. When the ball is heated by a Bunsen burner, it can no longer pass through the ring, but when both are heated together, the ball passes again through the ring.

Note: heat the ball and/or ring only to the degree necessary for the demonstration. Overheating will lead to permanent distortion.
